The online ticket and the combined tickets

The official ticket shop sells a skip-the-line ticket, valid for one year from the purchase date.

Three combined tickets pair the Musée Rodin with a neighbor. Each is valid for 3 months from the purchase date, for one visit to each site:

Option What it opens Validity
Admission ticket Hôtel Biron, sculpture garden, temporary exhibition 1 year
Rodin + Musée d’Orsay One visit to each museum 3 months
Rodin + Musée du quai Branly One visit to each museum 3 months
Rodin + Musée de l’Armée One visit to each, including the Tomb of Napoleon I 3 months
Membership card Unlimited skip-the-line access 1 year from pickup

It covers the permanent collections in the Hôtel Biron and the sculpture garden, plus the temporary exhibition when one is on. The online price includes a small fee for that direct access. See the ticket table above. The museum also sells tickets at its own desk, where it takes cards and cash.

Paris Museum Pass holders enter free. If you come back often, the membership card gives a year of unlimited skip-the-line access. A reduced rate applies to visitors under 30, and the card is strictly personal.

Who enters free, and what to bring

Free visitors do not book: you show a valid proof of eligibility at the entrance, at the access control. The list is long, and these groups cover most travelers:

  • visitors under 18, with a photo ID
  • residents of the European Union and the European Economic Area aged 18 to 25 inclusive, with a photo ID
  • visitors with disabilities and their companion
  • job seekers, with a France Travail document less than 6 months old and a photo ID.

On the first Sunday of each month from October to March, admission is free for everyone, again without advance booking.

  • Avoid this mistake

Free entry from 18 to 25 depends on residence, not age alone: it applies to residents of the EU and the EEA. Other visitors in that age group pay, unless another condition on the official list applies, so check before you skip the ticket shop.

Three spaces on an enclosed site

The site covers three hectares, fully enclosed, and splits into three distinct spaces. The reception building holds the temporary exhibition room and the shop.

The museum, in the Hôtel Biron, holds the permanent collections. The sculpture garden shows Rodin’s monumental works. The address is 77 rue de Varenne, served by Varenne metro station on Line 13, and the shop at 79 rue de Varenne can be visited without an admission ticket.

The garden has several moods: a rose garden to the north, a large parterre and woodland to the south, and a rest area beyond the pond. It stays accessible until dusk, so from November through March the ticket shop advises visiting it earlier in the day. The café-restaurant L’Augustine sits in the heart of the garden.

Inside the Hôtel Biron, room by room

The museum presents the collection in eighteen rooms, ordered around Rodin’s creative process: clay sketches, plaster casts, bronzes and marbles.

  • Good to know

The galleries of the permanent collection are not air-conditioned. During a heatwave, the museum advises visitors to drink plenty of water. The Studio Rodin, in the Chapel, is air-conditioned.

The museum warns that some works may be on loan to other institutions, so their presence is never guaranteed. Its own description of the route runs as follows:

  1. The Cantor Hall, with its monumental staircase.
  2. Three rooms on the artist’s early career.
  3. A rotunda for The Age of Bronze, with eighteenth-century wood trim, antique mirrors and pale parquet floors.
  4. The white marble of The Kiss.
  5. Room 16, given to Camille Claudel, a reminder of the ties between the two artists.
  6. The last room, where The Walking Man stands among Rodin’s own collection of antiquities.

Light comes in through large bay windows overlooking the garden, so the sculptures look different with the season and the time of day. From the first-floor windows you see the bronzes waiting below. Animated films on marble carving, lost-wax bronze casting and molding run along the route.

The bronzes in the garden

The garden is where the museum shows Rodin’s monumental works, and the official description names it as home to The Thinker.

The museum lists The Gates of Hell, The Burghers of Calais and the Monument to Balzac among its essential works. The Gates of Hell, left unfinished, contains elements of several major works, including The Thinker, Ugolino, The Kiss and The Three Shades: look for them in the mass of figures on the doors.

Rodin also collected. Among his purchases were three paintings by Van Gogh, including Père Tanguy, which the museum lists among its essential works.

Audio guides for adults and children

The adult audio guide offers three routes, in French, English, German, Chinese, Korean, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese, for ages 11 and up:

  • the masterpieces tour, about 1 hour
  • the Hôtel Biron tour, about 2 hours
  • the garden tour, about 45 minutes.

For children, an interactive tablet follows Dante and Clarisse from work to work, with games and clues and a final quiz. It lasts about an hour, in French and English, and is available every day the museum is open. On Sundays, except the first Sunday of the month, the museum runs Family Sundays guided tours, in French only, for children aged 6 and over with an adult. Arrive about 15 minutes before your slot.

From a rented studio to a national museum

  • 1732 The Hôtel Biron, a rococo mansion by the architect Jean Aubert, is completed.
  • 1908 Rodin finds it nearly abandoned and rents four ground-floor rooms.
  • 1911 He takes over the whole building.
  • 1916 A law allows the French State to accept his donation and gives the mansion and its garden to a museum.
  • 1919 The Musée Rodin opens on August 4.

The museum is France’s only self-financing national museum, with no state funding.

Bags, strollers and the closing routine

Under the government’s Vigipirate security measures, suitcases of all sizes and large bags are refused. Only small backpacks get in. The free cloakroom, in the Hôtel Biron at the entrance to the permanent collections, takes backpacks, large umbrellas and small luggage, but not large bags or valuables such as cameras, money and identity documents. Only umbrella-type strollers are allowed inside, and scooters and bikes are not.

The ticket office closes one hour before the museum, and staff start clearing the rooms 15 minutes before closing time. The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday and closed on January 1, May 1 and December 25. Check the opening hours below.

Ramps and an elevator give access to the whole collection, and wheelchairs are available at the cloakroom. Guide dogs are allowed everywhere on the site. Blind and visually impaired visitors can borrow gloves and a large-print and braille booklet for a tactile visit of selected sculptures, against a valid ID.
