Closed for renovation until 2030

The Centre Pompidou building, in the Beaubourg district of Paris, closed its doors on 22 September 2025 for a renovation that requires the complete closure of the building.

The official site gives 2030 as the year the new Centre should be operational. Until then there are no opening hours and no admission ticket for the building itself.

Some of its activities have moved rather than stopped:

  • The Public Information Library (Bpi) has moved to the Lumière building in the 12th arrondissement, with the same hours and access conditions.
  • The Centre’s cinema programs are hosted at the mk2 bibliothèque, at the BnF-François Mitterrand entrance, renamed mk2 bibliothèque x Centre Pompidou.
  • Ircam remains in its historic location on Place Stravinsky.
  • Avoid this mistake

While the Paris building is closed, an exhibition or event that carries the Centre Pompidou name takes place in a partner venue, not in the Beaubourg building. Check the venue and the city on the official “Where to find us” page before you plan your day around it.

What the works will change

The renovation has a technical side and a cultural side. The technical works, entrusted to AIA Life Designers, cover:

  • complete asbestos removal from the facades
  • treatment of corrosion on the main structure
  • enhanced fire safety
  • improved accessibility for people with reduced mobility
  • lower energy consumption for the whole building.

The cultural side, led by Moreau Kusunoki with Frida Escobedo Studio, rethinks how visitors move through the building. The plans include a redesigned Piazza, a restaurant, café, boutique and bookshop in the south of the building, continuing from the Forum mezzanine on Level 1, and a panoramic rooftop deck on Level 7, on the north side. The display of the Musée National d’Art Moderne on Levels 4 and 5 and the exhibition areas on Level 6 will also be redesigned.

Where the collection travels in the meantime

The Centre calls its program for the closure years Constellation: exhibitions, live performances, film screenings, talks and workshops in partner venues across France and abroad.

The aim, in the Centre’s own words, is to make the national collection more visible, not to put it to sleep. The current exhibitions and their dates are on the official program. The partners include:

Venue Where
Centre Pompidou-Metz Metz
Grand Palais Paris
Musée d’Art Moderne Paris
mk2 bibliothèque x Centre Pompidou Paris, 13th arrondissement
Kanal, Centre Pompidou Brussels
Centre Pompidou Málaga Málaga
Centre Pompidou Hanwha Seoul

In Massy, in Essonne, the Centre is also opening the Centre Pompidou Francilien, a new building that will house the reserves of the Musée National d’Art Moderne, with spaces for exhibitions and creation. The official site gives its opening date and the preview events.

Maison Pompidou, at the foot of the building site

Maison Pompidou stands at the foot of the construction site, at 50 rue Rambuteau in the 3rd arrondissement.

The Centre presents it as a permanent hub for information and resources on its history, its architecture and the coming transformation, and it also runs exhibitions there. It is open every day except Tuesdays. The official site gives the hours.

It is also the place to join the membership program in person: a POP’ card bought there is issued on the spot, while a card ordered online or by phone arrives at your home within seven days.

The POP’ membership while the building is shut

The POP’ membership is built around the closure years: the Centre presents it as a way to follow the Constellation program until the reopening. You choose a solo card or a duo card, with a lower rate for under-30s. See the table above.

What it opens, according to the Centre:

  1. Free and unlimited access to Centre Pompidou-Metz.
  2. Free and unlimited access, with time-slot booking, to the exhibitions co-produced by the Centre at the Grand Palais.
  3. Privileged access to other partner institutions of the Constellation program, free or at a reduced rate depending on the venue.
  4. Reduced rates on screenings at mk2 bibliothèque x Centre Pompidou and at the Forum des images.

The list of partner benefits changes with the program: the Centre publishes the current list of access points for members.

  • Good to know

If Metz is on your route, the membership card is the simplest way to see the Centre’s collection there more than once: access to Centre Pompidou-Metz is free and unlimited for members.

The building you will find again

The Centre is the work of Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers, two architects then in their thirties.

Their idea was to put everything that is usually hidden on the outside, so that each floor stays free inside. The building extends over 10 levels, 166 meters long and 42 meters high.

The facades follow a color code set by the architects:

  • blue for air flows
  • yellow for electricity
  • green for water circuits
  • red for pedestrian flow, escalators and lifts.

The red escalator running across the façade, nicknamed the caterpillar, served all levels and offered one of the finest views of Paris. Its critics first called the building “Notre Dame of the Pipes”.

From the Beaubourg competition to the closure

Paris had no large, free public library when the project began, and in 1968 President Charles de Gaulle named the Plateau Beaubourg as the site for one. The Centre grew from there:

  • 1969 President Georges Pompidou adopts the Beaubourg project, for a library and a center for contemporary art.
  • 1971 The Piano and Rogers design is chosen among 681 competition entries.
  • 1977 The Centre opens on the Beaubourg plateau.
  • 2000 It reopens on 1 January 2000 after redevelopment works begun in 1997.
  • 2025 The building closes for the renovation.

Before you go

  • The Paris building is closed: no visit, no ticket, no opening hours until it reopens.
  • Check the venue and city of any exhibition or event presented under the Centre Pompidou name.
  • Maison Pompidou is closed on Tuesdays.
  • A POP’ card bought at Maison Pompidou is issued on the spot. Online or by phone, allow seven days for delivery.
  • For the library, go to the Lumière building in the 12th arrondissement.
