Pantheon: tickets, opening hours and what to see

The Pantheon’s entry ticket is sold by Italy’s Ministry of Culture, on Musei Italiani or on site. It carries your name and a time slot. Under 18s and Rome residents go in free.

  • Landmark
  • Rome, Italy

In short

  • The official entry ticket is sold by the Ministry of Culture: on the Musei Italiani website and app, or at the ticket offices and machines on site.
  • Booking is optional, but online tickets carry a time slot and every ticket is named: it must match your identity document.
  • Free entry includes under 18s, residents of the Municipality of Rome, everyone on the first Sunday of the month and worshippers at Mass. The ministry’s national list gives the rest.
  • The Chapter of Santa Maria ad Martyres sells audio guides and guided tours with the entrance ticket included.
  • Inside, look up at the oculus and the coffered dome, then find the tombs of Raphael and two kings of Italy.
  • It is a working basilica: shoulders covered, and no tourist visits during Mass.
  • 43.30 mdiameter of the dome, equal to its height
  • 1,200people at most in each time slot
  • 609the temple becomes a church
  • 11.9 mheight of each granite column of the portico

Don't miss

  1. The oculus

The open eye at the top of the dome has never been covered: rain lands on the floor and runs off through drains in the paving.

  2. The coffered dome

Five rings of 28 sunken panels climb toward the oculus, under the largest unreinforced dome ever built, in the ministry’s words.

  3. The bronze doors

The oldest doors in Rome, 7.53 meters high. Analysis of their casting showed they are the original Roman ones.

  4. Raphael’s tomb

Third niche on the left, according to Wikipedia: the sarcophagus given by Gregory XVI, with an epigraph by Pietro Bembo.

  5. The royal tombs

Wikipedia places Victor Emmanuel II on the right, under a bronze plaque with a Roman eagle, and Umberto I and Queen Margherita on the left, under alabaster and gilded bronze.

The entry ticket comes from the ministry

The Pantheon is managed jointly by the Ministry of Culture and the Diocese of Rome, whose Chapter of Santa Maria ad Martyres runs the basilica’s welcome service. The entry ticket itself is sold by the ministry, through three channels:

Where you buy How it works
Musei Italiani website Register or log in, or buy as a guest. Choose the date, the time and the ticket type, then pay through PagoPA
Musei Italiani app The same official ticket
Ticket offices and machines on site Cash or card at the office, which closes one hour before the monument

In its warning about resellers, the ministry says that tickets bought from unauthorized resellers may result in denied entry and that official tickets can be purchased only on the Musei Italiani website. Its own page also lists the app and the ticket offices and machines on site. The Pantheon is not included in the Roma Pass and Omnia card circuit, and, according to the ministry, priority entry is not available.

Booking is optional, but the ticket is named

The ministry’s listing marks booking as optional. Tickets bought online are for a time slot chosen at the time of purchase, and the ministry asks you to respect it.

Each slot admits a maximum of 1,200 people. The same listing also says visits take place in order of arrival, so the two pages do not describe exactly how the slots work for a ticket bought on site. Tickets go on sale in the middle of the previous month.

Every individual ticket is nominal. At the entrance you show:

  • the original ticket issued by the Musei Italiani platform, in its entirety
  • an identity document, or a copy of it, matching the name on the ticket.

If the name does not match, entry is refused without refund.

  • Avoid this mistake

Buying for someone else? Put their name on the ticket. One name change is allowed, from your Musei Italiani personal area, but the ministry’s page gives two different rules for it: “until 24h before” the visit and, since March 10, “within 72 hours of the date and time” of the visit. Make the change as early as you can.

Free entry, and the reduced rate

Entry is free for, among others:

  • visitors under 18
  • residents of the Municipality of Rome
  • everyone on the first Sunday of each month
  • worshippers during Mass, when entry is free for the exercise of worship
  • licensed tour guides, with proof of license
  • groups of students and teachers from EU schools, and from Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland.

For the other categories, the ministry’s page points to its national list of concessions.

On first Sundays there are no online reservations. Everyone queues at the entrance for a free ticket that carries no name. The ministry warns that crowds are large on free days and that the free ticket gives no priority access.

The reduced rate is for EU citizens from 18 up to and including the day of their 25th birthday. The ministry extends the same reductions to citizens of non-EU states on condition of reciprocity. The agreement with the Diocese raised the full price and left reductions and exemptions unchanged. The ticket table above carries the current rate, with the date it was checked.

Audio guides and tours from the Chapter

The Chapter’s website sells visits with commentary, each with the entrance ticket included at no additional cost:

Option What it includes
Ticket and “official theatrical audio guide” (the Chapter’s wording) Audio guide in 11 languages, with 15 listening points and a map. Another page of the Chapter’s site says 9 languages
Ticket and guided tour A tour with a guide, in English, Italian or Spanish
The Heart of Rome An audio tour of the historic center in Italian, English or Spanish, with a paper map, the Pantheon ticket and audio guide, and the ticket for the inner perimeter of the Trevi Fountain

The ticket arrives only by email after purchase. Audio guides are collected at OhMyGuide, Roma Museum Store, Via dei Bergamaschi 49, a five-minute walk from the Pantheon.

  • Good to know

These packages are sold by the Chapter’s welcome service, not by the ministry, whose pages do not mention the Chapter’s site. For plain entry, buy the ministry ticket. Choose a Chapter package when you want the commentary.

Portico, doors and dome

You come in through the portico, under granite Corinthian columns: eight in the first rank and two groups of four behind.

The grey shafts were quarried at Mons Claudianus in Egypt and the pink ones at Aswan, and each is 11.9 meters tall. Above them runs the inscription M·AGRIPPA·L·F·COS·TERTIVM·FECIT: Marcus Agrippa, son of Lucius, made this when consul for the third time. Hadrian, who rebuilt the temple, kept Agrippa’s original inscription on the new building, which is why its date of construction is uncertain.

The bronze doors, 7.53 meters high, are the oldest in Rome. Analysis of the casting technique confirmed that they are the original Roman doors.

Inside, a cylindrical wall more than 6 meters thick carries the dome, 43.30 meters across and exactly as high. The ministry calls it the largest unreinforced dome ever built. Look for two things:

  • The oculus, the opening at the top, was never covered. Rain falls onto the floor, which has drains and a slope of about 30 centimeters to carry the water away.
  • The coffers, sunken panels set in five rings of 28.

Raphael and the kings of Italy

Since the Renaissance, the Pantheon has been a burial place. Following Wikipedia’s description of the interior, walking around the rotunda you pass:

  • Raphael, in the third niche on the left. His sarcophagus was given by Pope Gregory XVI, and its epigraph is by Pietro Bembo.
  • Victor Emmanuel II, in the second chapel on the right: a large bronze plaque under a Roman eagle and the arms of the House of Savoy, designed by Manfredo Manfredi.
  • Umberto I and Queen Margherita, in a chapel on the left: a slab of alabaster mounted in gilded bronze, designed by Giuseppe Sacconi.

Wikipedia also places a fresco of the Annunciation attributed to Melozzo da Forlì in the first chapel on the right, the Chapel of the Annunciation.

From Agrippa’s temple to a church

Agrippa’s name is on the front, but the walls are Hadrian’s:

  • 27 to 25 BC Marcus Agrippa builds the original structure to celebrate Augustus.
  • 118 to 125 Hadrian reconstructs it in its present form.
  • 609 Pope Boniface IV consecrates it to St. Mary and the Martyrs, after Emperor Phocas gave him the building.
  • 1883 The twin bell towers added under Urban VIII, nicknamed the ass’s ears, are removed.

The ministry credits the building’s preservation to its transformation into a church.

A working basilica: dress, silence and Mass

Clothing must suit a place of worship: shoulders covered, no shorts or skirts that are too short, no excessively low-cut or transparent clothing. Security and reception staff may refuse entry to anyone who does not comply.

  • Closed days

The ministry lists December 25 and January 1. The Chapter’s site also lists August 15, which the ministry’s page does not. Check the official notices before planning a visit on that date.

Inside, keep quiet and switch off or silence your devices. Phones may be used for photos and videos, not for calls. Food, drink and smoking, electronic cigarettes included, are not allowed, and dogs are admitted only as guide dogs or certified service animals. There is no cloakroom.

During Mass, on Saturdays and the eves of holidays and on Sundays and holidays, entry is reserved to worshippers and tourist visits of any kind are not permitted. Ticket sales stop one hour before any liturgical activity, and opening hours may change during religious celebrations.

Visitors with disabilities or reduced mobility enter by the external ramp on the Via della Minerva side. The Chapter’s information page gives the nearest metro stop as Barberini, on line A, about 700 meters away, and the Largo di Torre Argentina bus stop about 400 meters away.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to book the Pantheon in advance?

No, the ministry lists booking as optional, and the ticket offices and machines on site also sell tickets. Online tickets are for a chosen time slot, and each slot takes at most 1,200 people. The ministry’s listing also says visits are in order of arrival.

Is the Pantheon free to enter?

Among the free categories: visitors under 18, residents of the Municipality of Rome, everyone on the first Sunday of the month, worshippers attending Mass, licensed tour guides and EU school groups. The ministry’s page refers to its national list for the others. EU citizens aged 18 to 25 pay the reduced rate, which the ministry extends to non-EU citizens on condition of reciprocity.

Can I buy a priority ticket for the Pantheon?

No. The ministry says priority entry is not available, and the Pantheon is not part of the Roma Pass or the Omnia card.

Can I change the name on my Pantheon ticket?

Yes, once, from your Musei Italiani personal area. The ministry’s page words the deadline in two ways, “until 24h before” the visit and “within 72 hours of the date and time” of the visit, so do it as early as possible: at the entrance, the name must match your identity document.

Are the tickets on pantheonroma.com official?

Not as the ministry’s entry ticket. That site belongs to the welcome service of the Chapter of Santa Maria ad Martyres, which sells audio guides and tours with entry included. The ministry names Musei Italiani as the only official ticket channel and does not mention the Chapter’s site.

What is the dress code at the Pantheon?

Shoulders must be covered, and shorts or skirts that are too short, excessively low-cut clothing and transparent clothing are not permitted. Staff may refuse entry otherwise.
