Don't miss
Oceanus and his chariot
In the central niche, Pietro Bracci’s Oceanus drives a shell-shaped chariot pulled by a restive horse and a calm one.
Abundance and Salubrity
In the side niches: one pours water from an urn, the other holds a cup from which a snake drinks.
The aqueduct reliefs
Above the niches, scenes of the Roman origins of the Acqua Vergine, the aqueduct that supplies the fountain.
The red patina on the reef
The reef shows a red patina that the Sovrintendenza’s analysis ties to a marked rise in iron compared with reference travertine, a significant alteration of the stone.

| Where you stand | Ticket needed? |
|---|---|
| In the square, outside the inner perimeter | No |
| Inside the inner perimeter, at the edge of the basin, during visiting hours | Yes, unless you are entitled to free entry |
| Looking at the fountain after visiting hours | No |
Access to the inner perimeter is limited to about 400 people at a time. You go in from Via della Stamperia, by the central staircase, and leave on the opposite side, through the side gate on Via dei Crociferi. Staff direct the flow out.
The official site presents the ticket as a way to protect the fountain and to ensure better maintenance.
Who pays, and who goes in free
The ticket is for visitors who do not live in Rome or its Metropolitan City. Entry is free for:
- residents of Rome and the Metropolitan City, who show their identity card
- children under 6
- people with disabilities and one companion
- tour guides with a valid badge
- holders of a valid Roma MIC Card.
Residents show their identity card and tour guides their badge at the access control, and the entitlement documents are shown at the ticket office. Without proof, you pay. The ticket remains due on the first Sunday of the month.
Avoid this mistake
At the entrance, payment is by card only. Cash is accepted at the Musei Civici, the Tourist Info Points and partner outlets, which also sell the ticket.
Buying ahead, or at the gate
Online sales run through Vivaticket, linked from the official site. The organizer is Zetema Progetto Cultura. A prepaid ticket is open, with no date and no time, and it cannot be refunded or changed.
| Where you buy | Payment | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Official site, online | Online | Open ticket, no date or time |
| Musei Civici, Tourist Info Points, partner outlets | Cash or card | Open ticket, no date or time |
| Ticket office on Via della Stamperia | Card only | Sold for the same day only |
There are two lines at the entrance. If you already hold a ticket, are entitled to free entry or have a MIC Card, you go straight to the dedicated line. Everyone else queues to buy.
The Chapter of Santa Maria ad Martyres, at the Pantheon, sells its own package, The Heart of Rome, that bundles an audio tour of the historic center with the Pantheon ticket and a ticket for the Trevi inner perimeter. It is a Chapter product: the Trevi official site does not name the Chapter among its sales points, and the rules above (open ticket, no refund) are those it gives for its own tickets. For the Trevi ticket alone, use the channels in the table.
Reading the façade
The fountain is the terminal display of the Acqua Vergine, from 19 BC, the only ancient Roman aqueduct still in uninterrupted use.

Nicola Salvi set the whole display against the façade of Palazzo Poli. Built like a triumphal arch with a deep niche, it steps down to the wide basin over a broad reef of rock carved with plants.
What to pick out, from the center outward:
- Oceanus in the central niche, driving a chariot shaped like a shell. Two horses pull it, one restive and one calm, held back by two tritons. The statue is by Pietro Bracci.
- In the side niches, Abundance pouring water from her urn and Salubrity holding a cup from which a snake drinks.
- Above, reliefs on the Roman origins of the aqueduct. One shows the virgin who, as the story goes, helped Roman technicians find the spring in 19 BC.
- On the reef, a red patina: the Sovrintendenza Capitolina’s diagnostic analysis links it to a marked rise in iron compared with reference travertine, which it describes as a significant alteration of the stone.
The fountain stands 26.3 meters high and 49.15 meters wide. It is built of travertine, marble, plaster, stucco and metals.
How the fountain took shape
- Mid-12th century The name may come from a local place name already in use, regio Trivii, or from the three outlets of water of the earlier fountain.
- 1640 For Pope Urban VIII, Gian Lorenzo Bernini designs a new fountain facing the same way as today. Only an exedra-shaped base with a basin is built.
- 1730 or 1732 Pope Clement XII holds a competition. The Sovrintendenza dates it 1732 and says the pope picks the most monumental of the architect Nicola Salvi’s designs. Wikipedia dates the competition 1730 and the start of work 1732.
- 1751 Salvi dies with the work half finished.
- 1762 Giuseppe Pannini completes the fountain, reshaping part of the reef and regularizing the central basins.
The fountain also has its place in music and film: it is the subject of the third movement of Ottorino Respighi’s Fountains of Rome, and in Federico Fellini’s La Dolce Vita, Anita Ekberg wades into it with Marcello Mastroianni.
Rules at the edge of the basin
The inner perimeter has its own rules, backed by administrative fines:
- Do not eat, drink or smoke.
- Do not sit on the edge of the basin, climb or camp out.
- Throw nothing into the water except the traditional coin, and pour no liquids.
- Do not bathe or draw water. The fine for this is higher.
- Do not let animals drink from it, and wash no animals or clothes in it.
Damaging the fountain, its base or the surrounding area can lead to arrest for up to a year or a fine.
There are no toilets and no cloakroom, so the official site advises small bags. Dogs must be in a carrier, or on a leash and muzzled. Bicycles cannot enter the area.
Good to know
There are stairs down to the inner perimeter. A stroller can be left temporarily at the access control, but there is no custody service.
Choosing your moment
Visiting hours follow a weekly grid: on Mondays and Fridays, entry starts later than on the other days.
On some dates the entry time changes for maintenance or public order reasons, and the official site lists those dates. The hours block below gives the grid and the last entry. The Sovrintendenza’s page gives a single paid window for every day of the week, but it points to the official access site for hours, and that site gives the later Monday and Friday start. The official site also shows a crowd indicator, based on aggregated data on average attendance.
The area is inside Rome’s limited traffic zone, the ZTL. By metro, Barberini on line A is about 5 minutes on foot. Cavour on line B is about 15 minutes away.
